We don't offer a specific Face Painting Course, but let you choose your own classes to suit the stage that you have achieved, at a pace that suits your circumstances. Most beginners would need at least 3 classes AND LOTS OF PRACTICE to get them underway as proficient painter for commercial purposes.
The School Terms start in January and September, we close in December and July/August. Some of the specialised classes are only run once or twice a year, so book them while you can to avoid disappointment! We have 2 fantastic tutors to a maximum of 8 students - and find that this is absolutely necessary for careful attention. If there are only 4 students to a class, only 1 tutor will attend, but you will get plenty of personal attention at every class!
Introduction to Face Painting is a beginner's class; you do not need any previous experience. We will show you the materials, talk about brushes and go through the basic techniques for sponging, blending and painting. We have developed 2 separate classes that cover all the techniques you will need to interpret most designs. For some people these classes are enough to get them started and we may not see them again until they are exploring new techniques or wanting inspiration for advanced show-case faces, most people like to continue at their own pace. We try to run them on a Tuesday and Thursday of the same week to accommodate people travelling long distances, we've had students from all corners of the UK, Europe - and as far as Australia and Canada too!
The level for Starting Professional Face Painting is still fairly easy, it is for people who want to go out and practise (for money!) and contains quite a lot of info on insurance, queue management, pricing etc. Plus of course some useful designs that are easily adapted to increase your portfolio. If you have done some facepainting already and are producing reasonable faces in ten minutes or less each you are probably ready for this course. Teaching is very individual, and we aim for everyone to get the best they can out of a class at whatever level.
Both the above classes are practice based with informative handout booklets.
We give a certificate if you attend at least three classes including an assessment class (usually held on Starting Professional Facepainting) which, if you pass, gives you a face painting qualification recognised by Professional Beauty Direct for insurance purposes.
Other classes at the Introductory Level such as Boys and Monster Faces, Pretty Faces, Halloween Designs all give practice and designs which you will find useful. If you are a complete beginner you should let us know so that we can make sure you get the help you need.
Improving Techniques is for any level except absolute beginners and is designed to help you improve wherever you feel would be helpful to you. However long you have been painting, Blending, Colour Choices, Positioning, Speed and Brushwork are all areas that can be worked on, especially with the help of the outside viewpoint of a gentle critic, and failing that the sharp eyes of a London School of Face painting tutor!
Our Intermediate Classes are pitched at a level that assumes some experience, and include Shape Changing, Colour and Blending Techniques, Speed Painting and Butterfly and Eye Designs. These classes will encourage you to progress as a working face painter. We have added some specialist subjects such as One-Stroke Painting with popular Split Cakes and exciting Tribal Designs.
Advanced Classes are for all students looking for inspiration and WOW factor for their designs. We show more complicated designs and generally give less basic guidance on techniques, although we are happy to help if needed. The assumption is that the face painters attending are of a professional standard and are looking to explore and experiment with like minded people. Show Case Faces and Design Workshop are examples of advanced classes but if you have done some introductory classes and been painting for a while you will probably enjoy an advanced class. If you are unsure get in touch and we will be happy to advise you. Master Classes will be a demonstration of a particular artist's own designs and skills, they are more expensive to recognize the generosity of the artist in giving away their particular secrets, especially as you are welcome to take the designs away in (an on) your heads or in your camera and use them as inspiration.
You will appreciate that just attending a course does not necessarily mean that a student has reached a standard, so we do not issue attendance certificates as they can be misconstrued. We are recognised as a training body by Professional Beauty and students can take for an assessment after a minimum of three classes. If they pass the assessment, which focuses on health and safety, this qualifies them for Professional Beauty Public Liability Insurance.
